The advantage of having a reusable straw is not limited to its contribution to eco-system and healthy way of drinking.
Advantages of Reusable Straws
Almost all beverages are served with a straw. And why not? Straws makes a drink more enjoyable especially if you are sitting outside on a hot summer day, not to mentioning waiting for somebody.
But, we cannot deny the fact that single-use straws are bad for the environment, especially for marine life. So why do people still use them?
After just a few minutes of enjoyment they’re tossed in the trash, waiting to be carried to a landfilll; or worse, they’re just tossed on the ground. It’s not even just one straw a day for one person. Think about how many times in a day you drink from a straw? In a week? Month? Year?
Single-Use Straws and Pollution
According to Plastic Pollution Coalition, more than 500 million plastic straws are used everyday in the U.S. The figure itself is more than enough to explain what it can do to our environment. Actually single-use plastic straws also made it in the “top ten items washing up on shores” (Fast Company). Reports indicate that there will be more plastic by weight than fish in the ocean by 2050.
Just in case you are still doubtful, here are the reasons why single-use plastic straws are not worth it:
Many end up in the ocean. Just like any single-use plastic item, bags, cups, bottles, straws end up in the ocean.
Single-use straws are dangerous to animal life. Because of a straws small size, it is often mistaken for food by both animals and fish. When animals and fish ingest straws, it leads to suffocation and even death.
In the last 25 years, over 6 million straws and stirrers were removed from beaches during annual cleaning events. (One Green Planet)
