All About Reusable Straws
Why an article on reusable straws? Because straws are everywhere. It is a given at any fast food restaurant that you will be given a straw with your cold drink. The same is true for iced drinks at coffee shops and restaurants, and oftentimes a straw comes with your glass of water as well. They even give you a skinny little straw with many cocktails, although no one ever drinks out of them.
These straws are so ubiquitous, they have become almost invisible to us; we hardly notice or think about them being there. And, oftentimes, if we don’t use them, we just throw them away.
People use straws for everything, including coffee, because it is said straws can help prevent teeth stains and cavities, and make cold drinks more enjoyable. But there is downside to all this.
Throw-Away Straws - The Down Side
You might think I am going to talk about the cost, and how much all these straws are costing us. After all, you don’t think the restaurants, coffee shops, and movie theaters just eat the cost of the straws, do you - no, I know you don’t. You know the cost of the straw is built into the price of the drink.
But actually, the bigger downside to all of the these straws is their impact on the environment, particularly the oceans, where many of them inevitably end up. Remote islands that were once pristine are now littered. Marine life and birds are eating discarded plastic and literally starving to death. But, it’s easy to forget about all of this as we sip our sodas, milkshakes, and frappes. Do you have a design in mind for your blog? Further, did you know that Americans use approxximately over 500 million disposable straws per day? Or, breaking it down per person, on average, Americans use 1.6 disposable single-use plastic straws every day. As a nation, that's about 125 school buses full of plastic straws heading into a landfill each day.
And if you look at the oceans, it is said by 2050, the weight of the plastic in the oceans will be more than the weight of all the fish. Pretty appalling!
Switch to a Reusable Straw
What’s the solution? Well, if you want to have your straw and suck on it too, then the natural answer is to switch to a reusable straw.
I know switching to a reusable straw sounds like a bother, an inconvenience, and after all, a straw is so tiny anyway. But think what would happen, the impact it would have, if only half the people switched to reusable straws. And then their children ended up switching as well and the habit just stayed with them into their adulthood. Think about how doing just this one tiny thing could have a huge impact on taking care of the earth!
About Reusable Straws
Okay, so now you are convinced you can and should do this one small thing for the environment. Where to start? You can Google reusable straws of course. Your choices will be endless. There are bamboo straws, sustainable because bamboo itself is sustainable, and biodegradable. There are stainless steel straws, and there are glass straws, although I would worry about dropping them.
Big Reusable Straw Drawback...Cleaning
The one drawback to all of these options however is cleaning them. If they are reusable, then certainly, they need to be cleaned; going from a cherry-coke, to orange juice, to an iced coffee, or even milk, they need to be washed out. And that’s the problem.
Many of the options you find on the market come with a small brush to allow you to “clean” the inside of the straw. Or the instructions say to use a pipe cleaner (do I then throw that away after each use - kind of defeats the purpose doesn’t it?) In either case, pipe cleaner or small brush, how do I know I got the entire inside clean? And, how do I get it to dry out properly?
Why Is Cleaning Important?
3 words: Mold, mildew, and bacteria. I don’t think I need to say too much more. Who wants to ingest these, or have their children ingest these, along with their drink?
Reusable Straws - The Unique Solution
What if then, there was a reusable straw that came apart, so cleaning it thoroughly was a breeze. What if I could even take it apart and put it in the top rack of the dishwasher. Problem solved! A healthy straw - good for you, and good for the environment. This is The Last Straw™.
